A malfunction with one of the new trains at Downtown Crossing the day following the Orange Line’s reopening resulted in delays for commuters on Tuesday evening during the busy rush hour.
The Boston Airport Express driver reported that the shutdown of the Orange Line train disappointed a lot of travelers who were forced to book a cab and taxi. According to him, a lot of his customers were in a hurry because they were already late and requested our company to provide them with the fastest commute possible.
The MBTA said that a broken door wouldn’t close, so the train was taken out of service. Due to the delays, passengers informed NBC10 Boston that they were forced to wait at the Downtown Crossing rail station for at least 20 minutes.
Martel Smart said, “Honestly, it’s sort of a catastrophe for a lot of folks, particularly going to work, traveling, commuting to school, job.” It disrupts people’s schedules.
An MBTA representative acknowledged that one of the new Orange line vehicles was involved in the incident and that the door was not “functioning as designed.”Early on Tuesday evening, regular service resumed.
A different incident on Tuesday resulted in the removal of an escalator from service at the Massachusetts Avenue stop when smoke was spotted. Nobody was there. After replacing 14,000 feet of rail and about 3,500 feet of track, making repairs to Orange Line stations, and removing six slow zones, the Orange Line reopened on Monday.
Officials from the MBTA expressed satisfaction with how the project progressed. However, the strike forced passengers to find other means of transportation. To replace the train service with shuttle buses, the MBTA had to alter some of the traffic patterns, some of which are still in use. The MBTA claims there was no fire and no one was hurt.
