Two people were injured in a crash that occurred Thursday night at Springfield Hospital. They demand that the area be made safer. A man living near Boston Road told Western Mass News that too many accidents occur in the area. His calls for change have been growing over the years.
“Totally insane out there. This house has been my home for 55 years. I have seen dead people in the street around the corner. There are accidents all the time,” told Thomas LaFleur to BostonAirportExpress.com. He is a Springfield resident.
LaFleur stated that he has witnessed too many car accidents on Boston Road close to where he lives on Stuart Street. This includes a Thursday night crash in Pine Point just before 10:00. Ryan Walsh, the Springfield Police’s public information officer said that there were three cars involved in the accident.
Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The accident victim, who was driving a vehicle that crashed into a pole, will face a criminal charge of negligent operation of a motor car. LaFleur stated to Western Mass News that he would like to see more work done to prevent future accidents.
“Law enforcement should focus more on Boston Road, passing out tickets.” He suggested that more officers be hired to enforce the law, including those on Berkshire Avenue and Boston Road.
In November and December of 2012, Springfield Police conducted high visibility traffic enforcement along Boston Road and other busy streets. This resulted in hundreds upon hundreds of citations. Zaida Govan, Ward 8 City Councilor, hears LaFleur’s concerns.
“I think people drive too fast, this is something we have been discussing for a long time. Govan stated that he is currently attending a maintenance and improvement meeting about speeding up the public safety meeting. She stated that she hopes to be more proactive in addressing safety concerns on Boston Road.
“We have many ideas. There have been so many accidents on Boston Road. There have been many fatalities. We want those small cars for the kids to ride or with child/infant seat facility. Govan said that the sheriff’s office has a lot of these so they might paint them and place the speed limit sign at the curb. This will make people think, “Oh there’s a child in a car, maybe slow down.”
Govan stated that Western Mass News city councilors will discuss the matter at a meeting next Wednesday. Meanwhile, we urge people who use the road to drive safely and follow all traffic laws.
