This is to alert our riders and visitors to Boston and Logan Airport about the closure of a popular tunnel road that connects Logan Airport to Boston city. If you are taking a Boston car or taxi service, with us or with any other cab companies then this is important for you.

The Sumner Tunnel, completed in the 1930s, was one of the first tunnels in the state and also one of the oldest in the country. The city of Boston has changed significantly since the 1930s as well as the Sumner Tunnel is set to undergo restoration. This includes cracks and crumbling cement, reinforced concrete damaged wall panels, corroded lighting fixtures, and exposed rebar on the ceiling that were present for at most two generations.

A lot of people use the tunnel each day, and they need to find a different way to get into the city. Logan International Airport may also be accessible via the tunnel. After months of construction, nobody is able to exit the tunnel during the weekend.

Details of the Reconstruction Plan in Sumner Tunnel

The work will start on June 10, and continue until the Spring of the next year, at which point the first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed. This phase will feature many enhancements. New LED lighting, upgraded fire alarms, a brand new fire-fighting system, and modern electrical equipment are included in the project planning.

Tunnels will close for 36 weekends during the maintenance time. Beginning around 11:00 p.m. on Fridays the shops are closed to the general public. Monday mornings the tunnel will be reopened for traffic at 5 a.m.

In the course of Phase 2 which runs from May through September 2023 during which the tunnel will be closed. During this time, workers will tear down the floor of the tunnel as well as the arch over it, then construct the new arches and ceilings to replace them. In accordance with the presentation that was made, the workers will finish installing new conduits and cables as well as work on tunnel entryways, fix the walls of the tunnel, set up painted fireproof boards as well as pave the roadway, improve the firefighting systems and then remove the fittings with decorative designs for the restoration of the portal.

In this Phase, the closure of weekends during the autumn and winter of 2023 will allow the completion of a variety of tasks like the addition of modern-day signs and fireproof panels. Authorities will also be evaluating the condition of the underpasses. The officials say that the tunnel will be safer for the next 100 years when the tunnel is revamped.
